Holidaying in the Italian countryside

An agriturismo offers luxury and comfort. And the peace and quiet of a rural setting, because you are staying on a farm. A room with breakfast, for instance, or an apartment in a renovated manor, or an entire villa. The farm has its own olive groves and vineyard. They may also make their own jam, honey or cheese. Here you can revel in country life, away from the crowds. With Lucca – and other fascinating cities, villages and sights – at close range.

Lucca, the city of the wall and the square

Lucca is a lovely city, with lots of lively narrow streets with shops, bars and terraces. It is famous for the four kilometres of well-preserved city wall that surrounds it. And for the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, the oval square that was built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre. Relax on one of the many terraces. Don’t forget to visit the Duomo di San Martino Cathedral and the church of San Michele in Foro. Another remarkable landmark is the Torre Guinigi, a characteristic medieval tower with a little grove of oak-trees growing on the roof.

Tip: Rent a bicycle. Both the city and the surroundings are perfect for bike tours, as it’s flat. So you don’t need to battle steep hills in order to explore the area.

Only 30 minutes from the beach

Lucca is situated in the north of Tuscany. The sea is only a 30-minute drive. This makes Lucca a perfect place for holidaymakers who like to combine city trips with relaxation on the beach. The most famous bathing resort for families is Viareggio, 30 minutes by car from Lucca. Just a little further away is Forte dei Marmi, a resort for the jet set. You’ll find plenty of designer stores there. Alternatively, you can reach Pisa and Florence in no time too.

A day trip to Cinque terre

You could also spend a lovely day discovering the Cinque Terre. This part of Liguria is known for its five fishing villages, namely: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. A hiking path connects the villages. You could choose to do the trip by train, and enjoy the views of the coloured houses and panoramas of the sea. The area is moreover a national park.

An agriturismo near Lucca

After a day in the city, it’s lovely to unwind in an agriturismo in the countryside. My Italy has several agriturismos close to Lucca. All of them with pool. Some have their own restaurant, where you can savour local dishes and home-made products.

Child-friendly agriturismos near Lucca

Most of the agriturismos near Lucca are child-friendly. A place for your child to play and discover at their heart’s content. They usually have a playground and a swimming-pool, sometimes with a children’s pool. Some of the agriturismos have animals to pet or feed. And they may organize fun activities, baking pizzas or making pasta, for instance. Your child will easily find playmates here.

Personally selected by Margot

Every one of the agriturismos that I offer was handpicked by me, because of its quality, atmosphere, authenticity and hospitality.  After all, I have lived in Tuscany for over 10 years, learned the language and the culture.  And I know the agriturismos and their owners.
